In late 1999, Dr. William and Jamie Cromwell moved their family of six from Lake Wales, Florida to Raleigh, North Carolina. The Cromwells searched the Raleigh area for a Taekwondo school to continue their black belt training. Having trained at The Taekwondo School of Excellence in Lake Wales, they were looking for a school which offered highly technical training as well as a family-centered, Christ-honoring environment. After visiting many schools, the Cromwells were disappointed to not find the quality and atmosphere equal to their training in Florida. Their Master instructor in Florida suggested they begin a school of their own in Raleigh.
With a new job for Dr. Cromwell and homeschooling for Jamie, a new taekwondo school seemed overwhelming. Dr. Cromwell happened to mention his family's participation in a Christian taekwondo school at the church picnic at Open Door in May of 2000. Over the course of several months and after much prayer, a vision formed for a Taekwondo Ministry at Open Door Baptist Church.
Open Door Taekwondo's first class was held on October 1, 2000 with twelve students. The ministry met in the ANNEX, a refurbished double garage which has since been demolished. Over the course of the next few years, the ministry met in the new Annex, the little church building (now administrative building), Durant Elementary School, and Starpoints Performing Arts Center. We are blessed to now meet in the new facilities of Open Door Baptist church and currently have over 200 students and has graduated more than 100 Black belts.
The ministry continues to grow, not just in number of students, but in outreach opportunites. From mission trips to demonstrations, what God has done and continues to do grew out of a ministry He created. To God be all the Glory!!!
